CAPPELLE
MEDICEE
The Cappelle Medicee include the Cappella dei
Principi, begun by Matteo Nigetti on a plan by Don Giovanni
de' Medici, and the Sagrestia Nuova, the first architectural
work by Michelangelo. The latter, commisioned as a family
chapel by Cardinal Giulio de' Medici and Pope Leo X, was
begun by Michelangelo in 1521 and completed by Vasari and
Ammannati around 1555.
Within the Sagrestia Nuova are the famous Medici Tombs carved
by Michelangelo between 1524 and 1533 and the Madonna
and the Child also by Michelangelo.
