Stone Lithography

with

Wayne Kimball

printing on the Takach press at Santa Reparata

Course Description:

An intensive, 3-week course in stone lithography including 3 black and white editioning projects and lectures/discussion and demonstrations. Lectures to include color/multiple-run techniques, supply and materials information, special processes (e.g. tone roll, acid tint, positive and negative line engraving, tusche washes, flats, and precision deletions). It is also hoped that we can complete a group project which the instructor will take responsibility of printing with asistance of class members.

Goals and Objectives: (1)Through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and actual experience, students will become familiar with a broad range of lithographic concepts and processes. (2) Students will develop fundamental processing and printing skills through production of editions of lithographs. (3) Students will broaden their awareness of and sensitivity to the aesthetics of prints in general through exposure to prints of other students and to prints available in Florence and in library resources.

Because of time and expecially press-time constraints and limitations it will be necessary do a fair amount of course work outside of class time. There will be some flexibility in the use of class time since most of the formal instruction will be taken care of in 2 or 3 hour blocks. There will be a press and graining sink sign-up schedule, and it will be imperative that class members be flexible, cooperative (and helpful) with each other.

Prerequisites: .some familiarity with the process of lithography
