OVERVIEW DRAWING AND PAINTING PROGRAM Increase your working knowledge of the visual language of art through discussion of various periods of art and artists. Increase your "hands-on" knowledge of artistic techniques. Learn to apply critical visual judgement to your own work. Understand how your own individual creative and visual decisions are influenced by our collective visual history. Learn to use the power of a visual image to communicate an idea, concept or emotion.
|
| The Painting/Drawing Program offers students the opportunity to focus on both the formal and intellectual aspects of art making. Formal guidelines for 2-dimensional art, many of which were first articulated during the Renaissance, provide the basis on which drawing and painting classes are taught. Students will learn about perspective, spatial relationships, value, proportion, color, line, texture, shape, etc. Equal emphasis is placed on contemporary art issues and ideas which challenge students to find their own artistic voice. | |
| As Santa Reparata generally has a variety of students with various levels of art experience, classes are based on individualized instruction. This is combined with group discussions, use of a wide variety of visual examples, reading assignments, guest speakers and visits to gallery and museum shows. | |
| With a focus on learning the basic aspects of observational drawing, students will be encouraged to learn the skills needed to realistically render and draw objects in space. Renaissance systems of one point, multi-point and atmospheric perspective, along with chiaroscuro drawing are explored. Emphasis will be placed on the formal aspects of 2-dimensional representation such as line, tonality, shape, rhythm, balance, composition, space and proportion. Projects begin with basic drawing skills and expand into more personal forms of expression including large scale drawings. | |
